"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous fans have also petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos repeatedly show them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to form a group."

"And thus all is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record was born from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That developed toughness called for a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global audience.

Yet Haim will always be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
