Seven accused members of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
