The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
